Abstract
A transceiver having a down-converter for converting a radio-frequency (RF) input signal to an intermediate frequency (IF) signal with an analog low latency bypass path coupled to the IF signal and configured to provide a low latency IF signal and an up-converter for converting an IF signal to an RF signal. There is a digital path coupled to the IF signal and configured to provide a digitally processed IF signal, and an up-converter for converting at least one of the low latency IF signal and the digitally processed IF signal to an RF output signal. In a further example, the down-converter and the up-converter convert to millimeter wave frequencies and filters the millimeter wave frequencies with cavity filters.
Claims20
An up-converter for converting an intermediate frequency (IF) input signal to a radio-frequency (RF) output signal, wherein the up-converter comprises:
- an IF2 bandpass filter having an IF2 pass-band frequency, the IF2 bandpass filter coupled to the IF input signal and providing a filtered IF2 signal to a first mixer;
- an IF1 bandpass filter having an IF1 pass-band frequency, the IF1 bandpass filter coupled to an output of the first mixer and providing a filtered IF1 signal to a second mixer that provides an RF output, wherein the IF1 pass-band frequency of the IF1 bandpass filter is higher than a frequency of the RF output signal and the IF input signal, and wherein the IF1 bandpass filter comprises one or more millimeter-wave cavity filters;
- a first local oscillator coupled to the first mixer, the first local oscillator having a first local oscillator frequency that is higher than the IF2 pass-band frequency and higher than the IF1 pass-band frequency;
- and
- a second local oscillator coupled to the second mixer, the second local oscillator having a second local oscillator frequency that is higher than the IF2 pass-band frequency and higher than the IF1 pass-band frequency.
A tunable transceiver, comprising:
- a down-converter for converting a radio-frequency (RF) input signal to an intermediate frequency (IF) output signal, the down-converter comprising:
- a first mixer coupled to the RF input signal and to a first local oscillator, wherein the first mixer provides a down-converter millimeter wave signal;
- a down-converter IF1 bandpass filter coupled to the down-converter millimeter wave signal and providing a filtered down-converter IF1 signal;
- a second mixer coupled to the filtered down-converter IF1 signal and to a second local oscillator and providing a down-converter IF signal;
- a down-converter IF2 bandpass filter coupled to the down-converter IF signal and providing a filtered down-converter IF2 signal as the IF output signal;
- at least one of a digital signal processing section and a bypass analog modulation processing section coupled to the IF output signal from the down-converter and providing an IF input signal;
- an up-converter for converting the IF input signal to an RF output signal, the up-converter comprising:
- an up-converter IF2 bandpass filter coupled to the IF input signal and providing a filtered up-converter IF2 signal;
- a third mixer coupled to the filtered up-converter IF2 signal and a third local oscillator providing an up-converter millimeter wave signal;
- an up-converter IF1 bandpass filter coupled to the up-converter millimeter wave signal providing a filtered upconverter millimeter wave signal;
- and
- a fourth mixer coupled to the filtered upconverter millimeter wave signal and a fourth local oscillator, and providing the RF output signal.
