Apparatus, system, and method for stepping up high voltages within small form factors via optical couplings including an array of photovoltaic cells optically coupled to parallelly connected light emitting devices via a transfer medium

An artificial-reality system comprising:

• a head-mounted display;
• and
• a high-voltage optical transformer incorporated into the head-mounted display, wherein the high-voltage optical transformer comprises:
• an array of light-emitting devices that:
• are connected in parallel with one another;
• and
• are electrically coupled to an electrical input;
• a transfer medium;
• and
• an array of photovoltaic cells that:
• are optically coupled to the array of light-emitting devices via the transfer medium;
• are connected in series with one another;
• and
• produce an electrical output whose voltage is higher than the electrical input.

A method comprising:

• manufacturing a low-voltage die that includes an array of light-emitting devices that are connected in parallel with one another and are configured to be powered via an electrical input;
• manufacturing a high-voltage die that includes an array of photovoltaic cells that are connected in series with one another and are configured to produce an electrical output whose voltage is higher than the electrical input;
• and
• forming a high-voltage optical transformer with the low-voltage die and the high-voltage die by:
• bonding a transfer medium between the low-voltage die and the high-voltage die;
• and
• optically coupling the array of light-emitting devices to the array of photovoltaic cells via the transfer medium.
