Solution for super device imbalance in ZNS SSD

A data storage device, comprising:

• memory means for storing data, wherein the memory means is arranged into a plurality of super devices each having a plurality of active zones;
• and
• a controller coupled to the memory means, wherein the controller configured to:
• move data of a cold zone between the plurality of super devices, wherein:
• moving the data of the cold zone between the plurality of super devices effectively moves the cold zone from a first super device to a second super device;
• a cold zone is a zone that is overwritten less than a hot zone;
• and
• moving the data of the cold zone is responsive to:
• determining that a threshold value for a number of cold zones of the first super device has been reached or exceeded;
• and
• determining a number of cold zones of the second super device is at least one less than a threshold value for a number of cold zones of the second super device, wherein the threshold value for the number of cold zones of the first super device and the threshold value for the number of cold zones of the second super device are set by the controller.
