Unified object format for retaining compression and performing additional compression for reduced storage consumption in an object store

A computing device comprising:

• a memory comprising machine executable code;
• and
• a processor coupled to the memory, the processor configured to execute the machine executable code to cause the processor to:
• create an object according to a unified object format for tiering data from a performance tier to a capacity tier of an object store, wherein the data is stored within slots of the object and slot header metadata is attached to the object and comprises:
• a first metadata portion comprising a compression group number of a slot within which a block of the data is stored and a compression group logical index in the compression group number at which the slot is located;
• and
• a second metadata portion comprising offset and length location information for the data within a data section comprising the data;
• perform additional compression upon the object to recompress smaller compression groups to create a larger compression group by:
• decompressing file system physical blocks storing compressed file system logical blocks of the data in the object to create decompressed data;
• and
• recompressing the decompressed data with uncompressed file system logical blocks to create new file system physical blocks that have additional compression and are stored within the object;
• and
• store the object into the capacity tier of the object store.

A non-transitory machine readable medium comprising instructions for performing a method, which when executed by a machine, causes the machine to:

• create an object according to a unified object format for tiering data from a performance tier to a capacity tier of an object store, wherein the data is stored within slots of the object and slot header metadata is attached to the object and comprises:
• a first metadata portion comprising a compression group number of a slot within which a block of the data is stored and a compression group logical index in the compression group number at which the slot is located;
• and
• a second metadata portion comprising offset and length location information for the data within a data section comprising the data;
• perform additional compression upon the object to recompress smaller compression groups to create a larger compression group by:
• decompressing file system physical blocks storing compressed file system logical blocks of the data in the object to create decompressed data;
• and
• recompressing the decompressed data with uncompressed file system logical blocks to create new file system physical blocks that have additional compression and are stored within the object;
• and
• store the object into the capacity tier of the object store.
