Abstract
A conventional gasoline engine is retrofitted and calibrated to operate as a bi-fuel engine using Hydrogen as the second fuel. When operated with Hydrogen, which typically leads to a reduction of engine output power, the engine is preferably operated in a charged mode and in a lean mode with the engine throttle kept in a wide-open position during charged and lean mode operation resulting in a more efficient engine with a reduction of engine output power loss.
Claims35
A device of an engine, the device comprising:
- a processor operating the engine in a charged mode using a first fuel or operating the engine in a charged and lean mode using a second fuel and quality control wherein the processor is one of a microprocessor, microcontroller, computer, and an engine Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and the processor activates at least one air pump coupled to the engine to operate the engine in the charged mode.
A method of operating an engine, the method comprising:
- reading, by a processor of the engine, a status of a fuel selector switch coupled to the engine indicating one of a first fuel and second fuel selected for operating the engine, and
- setting by the processor, at least one engine parameter value, and controlling by the processor, at least one engine component to operate the engine in a charged mode using the first fuel or operate the engine in a charged and lean mode using the second fuel and quality control wherein the processor is one of a microprocessor, microcontroller, computer, and an Electronic Control Unit (ECU) and the processor activates at least one air pump coupled to the engine to operate the engine in the charged mode.
