Abstract
An air turbine starter that includes a housing. The housing can circumscribe a turbine coupled that is coupled to a gear train in a gear box via a drive shaft. The gear train can couple to an output shaft via at least a carrier. The air turbine starter can include at least a first bearing assembly and a second bearing assembly to rotatably support the drive shaft and the output shaft.
Claims20
An air turbine starter comprising:
- a housing having a primary inlet and primary outlet to define a primary air flow path from the primary inlet to the primary outlet;
- a gear box located within a gearbox section and having a drive shaft and an output shaft, with a gear train, including a carrier, operably coupling the drive shaft and the output shaft;
- a turbine having a rotor coupled to the drive shaft and a plurality of circumferentially spaced blades extending from the rotor;
- a first bearing assembly rotatably supporting the drive shaft relative to the housing;
- a second bearing assembly in contact with and rotatably supporting the output shaft relative to the housing;
- a third bearing assembly configured to rotatably support the carrier and located between the carrier and a second portion of the housing;
- a fourth bearing assembly located between the carrier and the output shaft;
- and
- a fifth bearing assembly axially spaced from the fourth bearing assembly and located between the carrier and the output shaft.
An air turbine starter comprising:
- a housing having an inlet and an outlet to define an air flow path from the inlet to the outlet;
- a gear box located within the housing and having a drive shaft and an output shaft, with a gear train, including a carrier, operably coupling the drive shaft and the output shaft;
- a turbine having a rotor coupled to the drive shaft and a plurality of circumferentially spaced blades extending from the rotor;
- a first bearing assembly rotatably supporting the drive shaft relative to the housing;
- a second bearing assembly in contact with and rotatably supporting the output shaft relative to the housing;
- and
- a third bearing assembly radially located between and rotatably supporting the carrier to the output shaft, wherein the third bearing assembly is in contact with a portion of the output shaft and at least one of the carrier or an engagement structure selectively coupled or fixed to the carrier.
