Abstract
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of iloprost of formula I through new intermediates, isolation of iloprost of formula I in solid form, as well as preparation of the 16(S)-iloprost and 16(R)-iloprost isomers of formulae (S)-I and (R)-I and isolation of iloprost of formula I and 16(S)-iloprost of formula (S)-I in solid, crystalline form.

Process for the preparation of the solid form of the compound of formula I
- comprising that
- (step 1) the purified oily compound of formula I is dissolved in the same amount of polar solvent as the mass of the oily product, and
- (step 2) such an amount of alkane is added to the solution of step 1 that the solution turns opalescent,
- (step 3) the solution is then solidified glassy at a temperature from −60° C. to −20° C. and the solvent is removed in high vacuum.
Solid phase iloprost in the form of amorphous powder.
Crystalline 16(S)-iloprost.
Iloprost having a purity of at least 98.5 mass % in the form of a crystal.
