Abstract
Compositions and methods are provided that are useful for diagnosing, treating, and monitoring alcohol dependence and disorders, susceptibility to alcohol dependence disorders, as well as drug related dependence and disorders. The methods include treating patients with an antagonist of the serotonin receptor 5-HT3 for such disorders, wherein the patient's serotonin transporter gene SLC6A4 is known to have particular genotypes.
Claims25
A method of treating an addictive disease or disorder, comprising:
- administering to a patient in need thereof a therapeutically effective amount of ondansetron, wherein the patient's HTR3A gene, HTR3B gene, and/or serotonin transporter gene SLC6A4 is known to have a genotype selected from sets (a)-(f):
- a. the TT genotype of rs1042173 of gene SLC6A4 and the AG genotype of rs1150226 of gene HTR3A;
- b. the TT genotype of rs1042173 of gene SLC6A4 and the AC genotype of rs17614942 of gene HTR3B;
- c. the TT genotype of rs1042173 of gene SLC6A4, the AG genotype of rs1150226 of gene HTR3A, and the AC genotype of rs17614942 of gene HTR3B;
- d. the TT genotype of rs1042173 of gene SLC6A4 and the GG genotype of rs1176713 of gene HTR3A;
- e. the TT genotype of rs1042173 of gene SLC6A4, the GG genotype of rs1176713 of gene HTR3A, and the AG genotype of rs1150226 of gene HTR3A;
- and,
- f. the TT genotype of rs1042173 of gene SLC6A4, the GG genotype of rs1176713 of gene HTR3A, and the AC genotype of rs17614942 of gene HTR3B];
- wherein the addictive disease or disorder is selected from the group consisting of:
- alcohol-related diseases and disorders and opioid-related disorders.
