Abstract
Polyoxymethylene polymer compositions and molded articles made from the composition are disclosed that are fuel resistant, particularly diesel fuel resistant, and resistant to highly acidic solutions. The polymer composition contains a polyoxymethylene polymer generally in an amount from about 90% to about 95% by weight. In addition, the polymer composition contains an acid neutralizing agent and a plasticizer at a weight ratio that has been found to significantly improve the acid resistant properties of the composition.

A polymer composition comprising:
- a polyoxymethylene polymer present in the polymer composition in an amount of at least 80% by weight;
- an acid neutralizing agent, the acid neutralizing agent being present in the polymer composition in an amount from greater than 5% to 10% by weight, wherein the acid neutralizing agent comprises magnesium oxide or a mixture of magnesium oxide and zinc oxide, the magnesium oxide having a BET surface area of greater than 25 m2/g;
- a plasticizer, wherein the plasticizer comprises a polyalkylene glycol, the polyalkylene glycol being present in the polymer composition in an amount from about 2% to 12% by weight;
- a sterically hindered phenol antioxidant;
- and
- a Charpy notched impact strength at 23° C. of greater than 5 kJ/m2, a tensile stress of greater than 54 MPa, and a tensile modulus of greater than 2,500 MPa.

A polymer composition comprising:
- a polyoxymethylene polymer present in the polymer composition in an amount of at least about 80% by weight;
- an acid neutralizing agent, the acid neutralizing agent comprising only magnesium oxide, the magnesium oxide having a BET surface area of greater than 25 m2/g, and wherein the acid neutralizing agent is present in the polymer composition in an amount greater than 5% by weight to 10% by weight;
- a plasticizer, the plasticizer comprising polyethylene glycol, the plasticizer being present in the polymer composition in an amount of from about 2% by weight to less than 12% by weight;
- an acid scavenger comprising a calcium salt;
- and
- at least one lubricant and at least one antioxidant.
