Abstract
The method grows a mycelial mass over a three-dimensional lattice such that a dense network of oriented hyphae is formed on the lattice. Growth along the lattice results in mycelium composite with highly organized hyphae strands and allows the design and production of composites with greater strength in chosen directions due to the organized nature of the supporting mycelia structure.
Claims10
A method of forming a product comprising
- providing a three-dimensional lattice having at least two grids oriented orthogonally to each other;
- coating the lattice with a mixture of starch and water;
- thereafter placing the lattice in a bed of inoculum containing Pleurotus ostreatus in a nutrient carrier;
- thereafter stimulating mycelium growth over and through the grids of the lattice to produce a dense network of hyphae;
- and
- allowing the hyphae to interweave over time to produce a mat of thickly formed mycelia on the lattice.
