Abstract
A cannula seal is presented. The cannula seal includes a cross-slit seal that can include a side wall that includes folded sidewalls; slits that are formed by the folded sidewalls when the cross-slit seal is in a closed position; and a concave end surface at the slits. The cross-slit seal can include energizing ribs formed to close the seal. The instrument guide includes a pyramidal shaped seal that seals against doors when no instrument is inserted and seals against an instrument when the instrument is inserted.
Claims20
A cross-slit seal comprising:
- a plurality of folded sidewalls having side surfaces extending to distal end surfaces;
- a first slit and a second slit that intersects the first slit to form a cross-slit in the distal end surfaces formed by the plurality of folded sidewalls when the cross-slit seal is in a closed position;
- a first rib at a first outer end surface that adjoins two of the plurality of folded sidewalls;
- and
- a second rib at a second outer end surface that adjoins two of the plurality of folded sidewalls;
- wherein the first rib and the second rib are sized, shaped, and positioned to engage an inside wall of a cannula that receives the cross-slit seal;
- wherein the first rib is at one end of the first slit and the second rib is at an opposite end of the first slit;
- and
- wherein the first rib and the second rib are sized and shaped to bias the second slit closed when the first rib and the second rib are engaged with the inside wall of the cannula.

A system comprising:
- a cannula comprising a proximal end and an inside wall;
- and
- a cap coupled to the proximal end of the cannula;
- the cap comprising a cross-slit seal;
- the cross-slit seal comprising:
- a plurality of folded sidewalls having side surfaces extending to distal end surfaces,
- a first slit and a second slit that intersects the first slit to form a cross-slit in the distal end surfaces formed by the plurality of folded sidewalls when the cross-slit seal is in a closed position,
- the first slit having a first end and a second end opposite the first end,
- a first rib oriented at the first end of the first slit and located at a first outer end surface that adjoins two of the plurality of plurality of folded sidewalls, and
- a second rib oriented at the second end of the first slit and located at a second outer end surface that adjoins two of the plurality of folded sidewalls,
- wherein the first rib and the second rib are sized, shaped, and positioned to engage the inside wall of the cannula when the cross-slit seal is received in the cannula, and
- wherein the first rib and the second rib are sized and shaped to bias the second slit closed when the first rib and the second rib are engaged with the inside wall of the cannula.
