## Abstract

A method may include in response to a user request for a playlist, identifying, by a processing device, a plurality of media items from the playlist, for each of the plurality of media items, determining whether a respective media item is available for a playback on a user device, in response to a determination that the respective media item is not available for the playback on the user device, causing the use device to advance to a next media item on the playlist without user interaction, and in response to a determination that the respective media item is available for the playback on the user device, causing the user device to play the respective media item.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method comprising:
in response to receiving a request from a user device for a playlist, identifying a plurality of media items from the playlist, wherein the plurality of media items are accessible for streaming to the user device from a remote location when determined to be available for playback on the user device;
causing the user device to display the playlist comprising the plurality of media items;
in response to receiving a user selection of a first media item directly from the plurality of media items of the displayed playlist, determining whether the first media item is available for the playback on the user device;
in response to determining that the first media item is available for playback on the user device, playing the first media item on the user device;
in response to determining that playback of the first media item is completed or is about to be completed, determining whether a second media item from the playlist is available for playback on the user device;
in response to determining that the second media item is available for playback on the user device, determining, based on a configuration, to play the second media item on the user device;
in response to determining that playback of the second media item is completed or is about to be completed, determining whether a third media item from the playlist is available for playback on the user device; and
in response to determining that the third media item is not available for the playback on the user device, performing at least one of:
(i) causing the user device to display a message indicating that the third media item is not available, or
(ii) identifying a fourth media item from the playlist that is available for playback instead of the third media item, and causing the user device to display information indicating that the fourth media item is available for playback instead of the third media item, and to stream, from the remote location, the fourth media item from the playlist.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein causing the user device to stream the fourth media item further comprises:
instructing a media player on the user device to skip the third media item and to play the fourth media item.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein displaying the message indicating that the third media item is not available further comprises transmitting the message to the user device.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein causing the user device to stream the fourth media item further comprises:
displaying the information indicating that the fourth media item is available for playback prior to playing the fourth media item.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The method of claim 4, wherein the information indicating that the fourth media item is available for playback comprises a title of the fourth media item, and one or more of a description or an indicator of an order of the fourth media item on the playlist.

### Claim 6 (depends on 4)

The method of claim 4, wherein the information indicating that the fourth media item is available for playback is displayed on the user device with a timer indicating time remaining before starting to play the fourth media item.

### Claim 7 (depends on 6)

The method of claim 6, further comprising providing a user interface element allowing a user to reject playback of the fourth media item during the time indicated by the timer.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, further comprising:
providing a watch page user interface to present the playlist, wherein each unavailable media item is to be identified on the playlist using a visual indicator.

### Claim 9

A system comprising:
a memory; and
a processor, coupled to the memory, to perform operations comprising:
in response to receiving a request from a user device for a playlist, identifying a plurality of media items from the playlist, wherein the plurality of media items are accessible for streaming to the user device from a remote location when determined to be available for playback on the user device;
causing the user device to display the playlist comprising the plurality of media items;
in response to receiving a user selection of a first media item directly from the plurality of media items of the displayed playlist, determining whether the first media item is available for the playback on the user device;
in response to determining that the first media item is available for playback on the user device, playing the first media item on the user device;
in response to determining that playback of the first media item is completed or is about to be completed, determining whether a second media item from the playlist is available for playback on the user device;
in response to determining that the second media item is available for playback on the user device, determining, based on a configuration, to play the second media item on the user device;
in response to determining that playback of the second media item is completed or is about to be completed, determining whether a third media item from the playlist is available for playback on the user device; and
in response to determining that the third media item is not available for the playback on the user device, performing at least one of:
(i) causing the user device to display a message indicating that the third media item is not available, or
(ii) identifying a fourth media item from the playlist that is available for playback instead of the third media item, and causing the user device to display information indicating that the fourth media item is available for playback instead of the third media item, and to stream, from the remote location, the fourth media item from the playlist.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The system of claim 9, wherein causing the user device to stream the fourth media item further comprises:
instructing a media player on the user device to skip the third media item and to play the fourth media item.

### Claim 11 (depends on 9)

The system of claim 9, wherein displaying the message indicating that the third media item is not available further comprises transmitting the message to the user device.

### Claim 12 (depends on 9)

The system of claim 9, wherein causing the user device to stream the fourth media item further comprises:
displaying the information indicating that the fourth media item is available for playback prior to playing the fourth media item.

### Claim 13 (depends on 12)

The system of claim 12, wherein the information indicating that the fourth media item is available for playback comprises a title of the fourth media item, and one or more of a description or an indicator of an order of the fourth media item on the playlist.

### Claim 14 (depends on 12)

The system of claim 12, wherein the information indicating that the fourth media item is available for playback is displayed on the user device with a timer indicating time remaining before starting to play the fourth media item.
