Abstract
Rotary heat exchangers can include a ride-along compressor, at least a portion of which can be rotated along with the heat exchanger. By rotating at least a portion of the compressor along with the heat exchanger, a sealed fluid circuit containing a two-phase working fluid can be provided. A rotary heat pump or heat engine can include an evaporator and a condenser in the form of back-to-back centrifugal fans. The centrifugal fan blades or other portions of the evaporator and condenser may include internal cavities where the working fluid undergoes a phase change.

A heat exchanger, comprising:
- a first rotary heat exchanger;
- a second rotary heat exchanger configured to rotate around an axis of rotation in the same direction as the first rotary heat exchanger;
- a fluid circuit extending through at least a portion of the first rotary heat exchanger and at least a portion of the second rotary heat exchanger and configured to permit passage of a working fluid between the first and second rotary heat exchangers;
- and
- a compressor disposed along the fluid circuit, the compressor comprising:
- a rotationally-fixed stator shaft, the rotationally-fixed stator shaft magnetically fixed relative to an external stator to prevent rotation of the rotationally-fixed stator shaft relative to the external stator, the rotationally-fixed stator shaft and the external stator positioned along the axis of rotation, and
- a compressor casing configured to rotate about the rotationally-fixed stator shaft around the axis of rotation along with the first rotary heat exchanger and in the same direction as the first rotary heat exchanger.
A heat exchanger, comprising:
- a first rotary heat exchanger configured to rotate about an axis of rotation and comprising a first plurality of tube sections extending substantially parallel to the axis of rotation;
- a second rotary heat exchanger comprising a second plurality of tube sections extending substantially parallel to the axis of rotation;
- a fluid circuit extending through the first and second pluralities of tube sections and configured to permit passage of a working fluid between the first and second rotary heat exchangers;
- and
- a compressor disposed along the fluid circuit, the compressor comprising:
- a main stator shaft configured to be rotationally fixed in place via a magnetic linkage with an external stator, the main stator shaft and the external stator positioned along the axis of rotation, and
- a compressor housing configured to rotate about the main stator shaft along with the first rotary heat exchanger and in the same direction as the first rotary heat exchanger.
A heat exchanger, comprising:
- a motor;
- a compressor, comprising:
- a stator shaft extending along a longitudinal axis and configured to be held in place by a magnetic linkage with an external stator;
- a rotor casing surrounding the stator shaft and configured to be rotated about the longitudinal axis of the stator shaft by the motor, a portion of the rotor casing extending between the stator shaft and the external stator and passing through the longitudinal axis of the stator shaft being allowed to rotate freely relative to the stator shaft and the external stator;
- and
- a plurality of gate rotors supported by gate rotor shafts offset from and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the stator shaft, the gate rotor shafts configured to orbit about the longitudinal axis of the stator when the rotor casing is rotated about the longitudinal axis of the stator shaft by the motor;
- a first rotary heat exchanger rotationally coupled to the rotor casing and comprising a first plurality of tube sections extending substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the stator shaft;
- a second rotary heat exchanger rotationally coupled to the first rotary heat exchanger and comprising a second plurality of tube sections extending substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the stator shaft, the compressor and the first and second pluralities of tube sections forming part of a sealed fluid circuit extending through the compressor and the first and second rotary heat exchangers.
