Abstract
The present invention includes a method for converting renewable energy source electricity and a hydrocarbon feedstock into a liquid fuel by providing a source of renewable electrical energy in communication with a synthesis gas generation unit and an air separation unit. Oxygen from the air separation unit and a hydrocarbon feedstock is provided to the synthesis gas generation unit, thereby causing partial oxidation reactions in the synthesis gas generation unit in a process that converts the hydrocarbon feedstock into synthesis gas. The synthesis gas is then converted into a liquid fuel.
Claims22
A method comprising:
- converting methane into hydrogen and carbon using a pyrolytic conversion unit where heating is provided by at least in part by electrical heating;
- adding the hydrogen that is produced in the pyrolytic conversion unit to a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide that is produced by a synthesis gas generation unit that uses at least one of steam reforming or partial oxidation to produce the mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide from a hydrocarbon feedstock;
- using the hydrogen that is pyrolytically produced to shift a balance of oxygen, carbon, and hydrogen to that used in production of at least one liquid hydrocarbon from the hydrocarbon feedstock, wherein the at least one liquid hydrocarbon includes one or more of methanol, synthetic diesel, or aviation fuel;
- and
- producing at least one liquid hydrocarbon from the mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide that is provided by the combination of hydrogen from the pyrolytic conversion unit with the mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide from the synthesis gas generation unit.
A method comprising:
- converting methane into hydrogen and carbon using a pyrolytic conversion unit where heating is provided by at least in part by electrically powered heating;
- using electricity from a renewable energy source to provide at least some of the electricity for the electrically powered heating;
- and
- reacting the hydrogen that is produced by the pyrolytic conversion unit with CO2 to produce a liquid fuel.
