Abstract
The present disclosure is directed to systems and methods avoiding collisions by monitoring the presence and alertness of a person in a vehicle. The alertness of that person may be monitored by identifying actions performed by that person when an automated driving assistant is used in a vehicle. Systems and method consistent with the present disclosure may monitor the alertness of a person that is located in a driving position of a vehicle according to criteria associated with particular individuals or with criteria associated with specific protocols. When a system or method consistent with the present disclosure identifies that a person is not alert, a corrective action may be initiated that reduces likelihood of a collision.
Claims20
A method for monitoring vehicle motion, the method comprising:
- receiving a first sensor dataset from one or more sensors of a vehicle, the first sensor dataset collected while a driver drives the vehicle and indicative of one or more inputs to the vehicle by the driver;
- identifying a driving pattern of the driver relative to a lane of a roadway along which the vehicle is moving based on analyzing the first sensor dataset, the driving pattern associated with motion of the vehicle perpendicular to at least one of a plurality of boundaries of the lane;
- setting, based on the driving pattern of the driver relative to the lane, a left lane variance threshold line and a right lane variance threshold line associated with a driver profile of the driver, wherein the left lane variance threshold line and the right lane variance threshold line are distinct from and located between the plurality of boundaries of the lane of the roadway;
- associating the left lane variance threshold line and the right lane variance threshold line with the driver profile, wherein other driver profiles are associated with different left lane variance threshold lines than the left lane variance threshold line and different right lane variance threshold lines than the right lane variance threshold line based on the other driver profiles being associated with different driving patterns than the driving pattern;
- receiving a second sensor dataset from the one or more sensors of the vehicle, the second sensor dataset collected while the driver drives the vehicle and after collection of the first sensor dataset;
- identifying, based on the second sensor dataset, that the motion of the vehicle is maintained within the plurality of boundaries of the lane of the roadway while exiting an area between the left lane variance threshold line and the right lane variance threshold line for at least a threshold period of time based on the driver profile;
- and
- sending an alert based on the identification that the motion of the vehicle is maintained within the plurality of boundaries of the lane while exiting the area between the left lane variance threshold line and the right lane variance threshold line for at least the threshold period of time, wherein the alert indicates that the driver is inattentive.
A non-transitory computer-readable storage media having embodied thereon a program executable by a processor for implementing a method for monitoring vehicle motion, the method comprising:
- receiving a first sensor dataset from one or more sensors of a vehicle, the first sensor dataset collected while a driver drives the vehicle and indicative of one or more inputs to the vehicle by the driver;
- identifying a driving pattern of the driver relative to a lane of a roadway along which the vehicle is moving based on analyzing the first sensor dataset, the driving pattern associated with motion of the vehicle perpendicular to at least one of a plurality of boundaries of the lane;
- setting, based on the driving pattern of the driver relative to the lane, a left lane variance threshold line and a right lane variance threshold line associated with a driver profile of the driver, wherein the left lane variance threshold line and the right lane variance threshold line are distinct from and located between the plurality of boundaries of the lane of the roadway;
- associating the left lane variance threshold line and the right lane variance threshold line with the driver profile, wherein other driver profiles are associated with different left lane variance threshold lines than the left lane variance threshold line and different right lane variance threshold lines than the right lane variance threshold line based on the other driver profiles being associated with different driving patterns than the driving pattern;
- receiving a second sensor dataset from the one or more sensors of the vehicle, the second sensor dataset collected while the driver drives the vehicle and after collection of the first sensor dataset;
- identifying, based on the second sensor dataset, that the motion of the vehicle is maintained within the plurality of boundaries of the lane of the roadway while exiting an area between the left lane variance threshold line and the right lane variance threshold line for at least a threshold period of time based on the driver profile;
- and
- sending an alert based on the identification that the motion of the vehicle is maintained within the plurality of boundaries of the lane while exiting the area between the left lane variance threshold line and the right lane variance threshold line for at least the threshold period of time, wherein the alert indicates that the driver is inattentive.
An apparatus for monitoring a vehicle motion, the apparatus comprising:
- one or more sensors at a vehicle that sense a first sensor dataset, the first sensor dataset sensed while a driver drives the vehicle;
- a memory;
- and
- a processor that executes instructions out of the memory to:
- receiving the first sensor dataset from the one or more sensors of the vehicle, the first sensor dataset collected while a driver drives the vehicle and indicative of one or more inputs to the vehicle by the driver;
- identifying a driving pattern of the driver relative to a lane of a roadway along which the vehicle is moving based on analyzing the first sensor dataset, the driving pattern associated with motion of the vehicle perpendicular to at least one of a plurality of boundaries of the lane;
- setting, based on the driving pattern of the driver relative to the lane, a left lane variance threshold line and a right lane variance threshold line associated with a driver profile of the driver, wherein the left lane variance threshold line and the right lane variance threshold line are distinct from and located between the plurality of boundaries of the lane of the roadway;
- associating the left lane variance threshold line and the right lane variance threshold line with the driver profile, wherein other driver profiles are associated with different left lane variance threshold lines than the left lane variance threshold line and different right lane variance threshold lines than the right lane variance threshold line based on the other driver profiles being associated with different driving patterns than the driving pattern;
- receiving a second sensor dataset from the one or more sensors of the vehicle, the second sensor dataset collected while the driver drives the vehicle and after collection of the first sensor dataset;
- identifying, based on the second sensor dataset, that the motion of the vehicle is maintained within the plurality of boundaries of the lane of the roadway while exiting an area between the left lane variance threshold line and the right lane variance threshold line for at least a threshold period of time based on the driver profile;
- and
- sending an alert based on the identification that the motion of the vehicle is maintained within the plurality of boundaries of the lane while exiting the area between the left lane variance threshold line and the right lane variance threshold line for at least the threshold period of time, wherein the alert indicates that the driver is inattentive.
