Instant auto-focus with distance estimation

A system comprising:

• an image sensor;
• a lens;
• and
• a control circuit configured to:
• receive, from the image sensor, a first image of a scene captured from a first location of a camera;
• receive one or more indications of movement of the camera subsequent to the first image being captured;
• receive, from the image sensor, a second image of the scene captured from a second location of the camera, wherein the second location is a different location than the first location;
• calculate a first distance between the first location of the camera and the second location of the camera based on the one or more indications of the movement;
• calculate a second distance to an object in the scene from the second location of the camera based on the first distance and based on angles between the first location of the camera and the object and the second location of the camera and the object;
• and
• cause a position of the lens to be adjusted to bring the object into focus based on the second distance.

A method comprising:

• receiving, by a control circuit, a first image of a scene captured from a first location of a camera;
• receiving one or more indications of movement of the camera subsequent to the first image being captured;
• receiving a second image of the scene captured from a second location of the camera, wherein the second location is a different location than the first location;
• calculating a first distance between the first location of the camera and the second location of the camera based on the one or more indications of the movement;
• calculating a second distance to the scene from the second location of the camera based on the first distance and based on angles between the first location of the camera and the scene and the second location of the camera and the scene;
• and
• causing a position of a lens to be adjusted to bring the scene into focus based on the second distance.
