Regulating enqueueing and dequeuing border gateway protocol (BGP) update messages

A network device, comprising:

• one or more memories;
• and one or more processors to:
• pause writing update messages to a plurality of peer queues associated with a plurality of peer network devices based on an upper utilization threshold for a particular peer queue, of the plurality of peer queues, being satisfied, wherein the upper utilization threshold is based on one or more of:
• an upper threshold amount of update messages that can be transmitted, over a period of time, by the network device;
• or an upper threshold amount of update messages that can be received, over the period of time, by the network device;
• determine that a lower utilization threshold associated with the particular peer queue is satisfied;
• and resume writing the update messages to the plurality of peer queues based on the lower utilization threshold being satisfied, wherein the lower utilization threshold corresponds to a lower threshold amount of update messages stored in the particular peer queue, and wherein the upper utilization threshold is a different than the lower utilization threshold.

A non-transitory computer-readable medium storing instructions, the instructions comprising:

• one or more instructions that, when executed by one or more processors of a network device, cause the one or more processors to:
• pause writing update messages to a plurality of peer queues associated with a plurality of peer network devices, based on an upper utilization threshold for a particular peer queue, of the plurality of peer queues, being satisfied, wherein the upper utilization threshold is based on one or more of:
• an upper threshold amount of update messages that can be transmitted, over a period of time, by the network device, or an upper threshold amount of update messages that can be received, over the period of time, by the network device, and wherein the update messages are associated with policy information for a protocol;
• determine that a lower utilization threshold associated with the particular peer queue is satisfied;
• and write the update messages to the plurality of peer queues based on the lower utilization threshold associated with the particular peer queue being satisfied, wherein the lower utilization threshold corresponds to a lower threshold amount of update messages stored in the particular peer queue, and wherein the upper utilization threshold is different than the lower utilization threshold.
