Abstract
This disclosure describes various methods, systems, and devices related to identifying an issue in a network using a probe packet. An example method includes identifying an expired data packet transmitted in a network and addressed to a destination; generating a probe packet addressed to the destination; and forwarding the probe packet. When the probe packet is received, a report indicating a routing loop in the network can be transmitted to an administrator.
Claims20
A method performed by a computing node, the method comprising:
- generating a probe packet addressed to a destination node of an expired data packet;
- sending the probe packet in a network towards the destination node;
- receiving the probe packet;
- and
- based on receiving the probe packet;
- identifying In-situ Operations, Administration, and Management (IOAM) information in the probe packet;
- identifying one or more intermediary nodes in a routing loop based, at least in part, on the IOAM information;
- generating a report, wherein the report indicates a presence of the routing loop and identifies the one or more intermediary nodes in the routing loop;
- and
- sending, to an administrator, the report.
A system comprising:
- one or more processors;
- and
- one or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:
- generating a probe packet addressed to a destination node of an expired data packet;
- sending the probe packet in a network towards the destination node;
- receiving the probe packet;
- and
- based on receiving the probe packet;
- identifying In-situ Operations, Administration, and Management (IOAM) information in the probe packet;
- identifying one or more intermediary nodes in a routing loop based, at least in part, on the IOAM information;
- generating a report indicating a presence of the routing loop and identifying the one or more intermediary nodes in the routing loop;
- and
- sending, to an administrator, the report.
One or more non-transitory computer-readable media storing computer-executable instructions that, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to perform operations comprising:
- generating a first probe packet addressed to a first destination node of a first expired data packet;
- sending the first probe packet in a network towards the first destination node;
- receiving the first probe packet;
- based on receiving the first probe packet:
- identifying In-situ Operations, Administration, and Management (IOAM) information in the first probe packet;
- identifying one or more intermediary nodes in a first routing loop based, at least in part, on the IOAM information;
- generating a first report indicating a presence of the first routing loop and identifying the one or more intermediary nodes in the first routing loop;
- and
- sending, to an administrator, the first report;
- generating a second probe packet addressed to a second destination node of a second expired data packet;
- sending the second probe packet in the network towards the second destination node;
- and
- upon expiration of a wait time after sending the second probe packet without having received the second probe packet, sending, to the administrator, a second report indicating an absence of a second routing loop.
