Silicon-based energy storage devices with functionalized linear sulfonate ester derivative compound containing electrolyte additives

An energy storage device comprising:

• a first electrode and a second electrode, wherein one or both of the first electrode and the second electrode is a Si-based electrode;
• a separator between the first electrode and the second electrode;
• an electrolyte;
• and
• at least one electrolyte additive comprising a sulfonate ester compound;
• wherein the sulfonate ester compound is of formula (I):
• where R1 and R2 are the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of H, alkyl, fluoro-alkyl, alkylene, alkenyl, alkenylene, alkynyl, alkynylene, cycloalkyl, cycloalkylene, aryl, arylene, heteroaryl, heteroalkyl, heteroalkylene and heterocycloalkylene, where the heteroatom in said heteroaryl, heteroalkyl, heteroalkylene and heterocycloalkylene group is N or S;
• and
• wherein said Si-based electrode comprises silicon particles having an average particle size between about 10 nm and about 40 μm and where silicon is the majority of the active material used in the electrode;
• and
• wherein the electrolyte additive is selected from the group consisting of Phenyl vinylsulfonate (PVSA) (CAS:
