System and method for providing a quiet zone

An audio system comprising:

• a plurality of microphones configured to receive a plurality of remote audio signals, wherein:
• the plurality of remote audio signals comprise an unwanted sound emanating from a particular location,
• the unwanted sound comprises frequencies in a predetermined frequency band,
• each of the plurality of microphones is positioned at least one fourth of a particular wavelength away from the particular location, and
• the particular wavelength corresponds to a lowest frequency of the predetermined frequency band;
• a processor configured to:
• filter the plurality of remote audio signals to pass the predetermined frequency band,
• determine a relationship between a local audio signal and the filtered remote audio signals, and
• generate, according to the local audio signal and the relationship, a cancellation signal;
• and
• a loudspeaker configured to output the cancellation signal to counteract, at least in part, the unwanted sound.

An audio system comprising:

• a microphone;
• a loudspeaker;
• and
• processor operable to:
• receive, via the microphone, a remote audio signal, wherein the microphone is positioned at least one fourth of a particular wavelength away from a particular location;
• identify an unwanted sound in the remote audio signal;
• filter the remote audio signal to pass a frequency band of sound to be counteracted, wherein a lower frequency of the frequency band is determined by the particular wavelength;
• determine a relationship between a local audio signal, at the particular location, and the filtered remote audio signal;
• and
• generate, according to the local audio signal and the determined relationship, a cancellation signal that, when output by the loudspeaker, will counteract, at least in part, the unwanted sound.
