Abstract
Prior to an update of an operating system of a computing device, a configuration operation is performed with respect to a particular processor of the computing device, such that the particular processor is indicated to the operating system as being in an offline state while an application runs at the particular processor. The operating system is then updated. The update comprises a time interval in which the operating system is unavailable and the application performs one or more computations at the particular processor. After the update, the application is restarted.
Claims20
A computer-implemented method, comprising:
- causing, by a control plane resource of a service of a cloud computing environment, a temporary replacement operating system to be transmitted to a data plane resource of the cloud computing service, wherein the data plane resource comprises a normal mode operating system and an application;
- causing, by the control plane resource, the application to be notified that an update of the normal mode operating system is to be performed;
- and
- causing, by the control plane resource, at least a portion of an update workflow of the normal mode operating system to be performed at the data plane resource, wherein during the portion of the update workflow, (a) the normal mode operating system is unavailable to the application, and (b) the temporary replacement operating system responds to one or more application requests from the application.
A system, comprising:
- one or more computing devices;
- wherein the one or more computing devices include instructions that upon execution on or across the one or more computing devices:
- cause, by a control plane resource of a service of a cloud computing environment, a temporary replacement operating system to be transmitted to a data plane resource of the cloud computing service, wherein the data plane resource comprises a normal mode operating system and an application;
- cause, by the control plane resource, the application to be notified that an update of the normal mode operating system is to be performed;
- and
- cause, by the control plane resource, at least a portion of an update workflow of the normal mode operating system to be performed at the data plane resource, wherein during the portion of the update workflow, (a) the normal mode operating system is unavailable to the application, and (b) the temporary replacement operating system responds to one or more application requests from the application.
One or more non-transitory computer-accessible storage media storing program instructions that when executed on or across one or more processors:
- cause, by a control plane resource of a service of a cloud computing environment, a temporary replacement operating system to be transmitted to a data plane resource of the cloud computing service, wherein the data plane resource comprises a normal mode operating system and an application;
- cause, by the control plane resource, the application to be notified that an update of the normal mode operating system is to be performed;
- and
- cause, by the control plane resource, at least a portion of an update workflow of the normal mode operating system to be performed at the data plane resource, wherein during the portion of the update workflow, (a) the normal mode operating system is unavailable to the application, and (b) the temporary replacement operating system responds to one or more application requests from the application.
