Abstract
Techniques disclosed herein provide improved techniques for generating backup copies associated with applications. For example, a method comprises managing synchronous generation of a backup copy of an application comprised of two or more application components respectively executed on two or more host devices, wherein each host device has a storage system associated therewith, by controlling the creation of a backup copy of each application component executed on each host device on its associated storage system within the same time period.
Claims20
An apparatus comprising:
- at least one processing device comprising a processor coupled to a memory, the at least one processing device, when executing program code, is configured to:
- identify two or more application components of a single application distributed across two or more host devices of a plurality of host devices;
- and
- manage synchronous generation of a backup copy of each of the two or more application components of the single application respectively executed on the two or more host devices, wherein each host device has a storage system associated therewith, wherein managing synchronous generation of the backup copy of the single application comprises controlling the creation of a backup copy of each application component executed on each host device on its associated storage system within a same time period;
- wherein managing the synchronous generation of the backup copy of each of the two or more application components comprises:
- instantiating a first set of concurrent execution threads on the two or more host devices to halt write operations associated with the two or more application components;
- determining whether an amount of time taken to complete the first set of concurrent execution threads exceeds a designated threshold amount of time;
- responsive to determining that the amount of time taken to complete the first set of concurrent execution threads does not exceed the designated threshold amount of time, instantiating a second set of concurrent execution threads on the two or more host devices to create the backup copy of each of the two or more application components;
- and
- responsive to determining that each of the two or more host devices has successfully completed creation and storage of the backup copy for each of its associated ones of the two or more application components, instantiating a third set of concurrent execution threads on the two or more host devices to release the halt on the write operations associated with the two or more application components;
- wherein a first subset of the two or more host devices run a first operating system and at least a second subset of the two or more host devices run a second operating system, the second operating system being different than the first operating system;
- and
- wherein the first, second and third sets of concurrent execution threads provide a synchronized commit window across the first subset of the two or more host devices running the first operating system and the second subset of the two or more host devices running the second operating system.
A method comprising:
- identifying two or more application components of a single application distributed across two or more host devices of a plurality of host devices;
- and
- managing synchronous generation of a backup copy of each of the two or more application components of the single application respectively executed on the two or more host devices, wherein each host device has a storage system associated therewith, wherein managing synchronous generation of the backup copy of the single application comprises controlling the creation of a backup copy of each application component executed on each host device on its associated storage system within a same time period;
- wherein managing the synchronous generation of the backup copy of each of the two or more application components comprises:
- instantiating a first set of concurrent execution threads on the two or more host devices to halt write operations associated with the two or more application components;
- determining whether an amount of time taken to complete the first set of concurrent execution threads exceeds a designated threshold amount of time;
- responsive to determining that the amount of time taken to complete the first set of concurrent execution threads does not exceed the designated threshold amount of time, instantiating a second set of concurrent execution threads on the two or more host devices to create the backup copy of each of the two or more application components;
- and
- responsive to determining that each of the two or more host devices has successfully completed creation and storage of the backup copy for each of its associated ones of the two or more application components, instantiating a third set of concurrent execution threads on the two or more host devices to release the halt on the write operations associated with the two or more application components;
- wherein a first subset of the two or more host devices run a first operating system and at least a second subset of the two or more host devices run a second operating system, the second operating system being different than the first operating system;
- and
- wherein the first, second and third sets of concurrent execution threads provide a synchronized commit window across the first subset of the two or more host devices running the first operating system and the second subset of the two or more host devices running the second operating system;
- and
- wherein the method is performed by at least one processing device comprising a processor coupled to a memory executing program code.
A computer program product comprising a non-transitory processor-readable storage medium having stored therein program code of one or more software programs, wherein the program code when executed by at least one processing device causes the at least one processing device to:
- identify two or more application components of a single application distributed across two or more host devices of a plurality of host devices;
- and
- manage synchronous generation of a backup copy of each of the two or more application components of the single application respectively executed on the two or more host devices, wherein each host device has a storage system associated therewith, wherein managing synchronous generation of the backup copy of the single application comprises controlling the creation of a backup copy of each application component executed on each host device on its associated storage system within a same time period;
- wherein managing the synchronous generation of the backup copy of each of the two or more application components comprises:
- instantiating a first set of concurrent execution threads on the two or more host devices to halt write operations associated with the two or more application components;
- determining whether an amount of time taken to complete the first set of concurrent execution threads exceeds a designated threshold amount of time;
- responsive to determining that the amount of time taken to complete the first set of concurrent execution threads does not exceed the designated threshold amount of time, instantiating a second set of concurrent execution threads on the two or more host devices to create the backup copy of each of the two or more application components;
- and
- responsive to determining that each of the two or more host devices has successfully completed creation and storage of the backup copy for each of its associated ones of the two or more application components, instantiating a third set of concurrent execution threads on the two or more host devices to release the halt on the write operations associated with the two or more application components;
- wherein a first subset of the two or more host devices run a first operating system and at least a second subset of the two or more host devices run a second operating system, the second operating system being different than the first operating system;
- and
- wherein the first, second and third sets of concurrent execution threads provide a synchronized commit window across the first subset of the two or more host devices running the first operating system and the second subset of the two or more host devices running the second operating system.
