## Abstract

This disclosure describes single and multi-layer woven meshes designed to enable sucking flow condensation and capillary-driven liquid film boiling, respectively, for instance, in use in heat spreaders. The single-layer woven meshes can include a nanostructure coating and a hydrophobic coating, while the multi-layer meshes can include a microcavity coating and optionally a hydrophilic coating.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A mesh system with gradient channels, the system comprising:
a multi-layer woven mesh with increasing mesh pore size bonded to a thermally conducting substrate and having a plurality of nano or microstructured features to increase boiling nucleation sites;
multi-layer interconnected microchannels formed within the mesh and between the mesh d the substrate for capillary liquid wicking; and
self-aligned gradient microchannels, each self-aligned gradient microchannel comprising mesh pores of increasing size extending away from the substrate to promote vapor and liquid to escape from the mesh system;
whereby a critical heat flux and a heat transfer coefficient are increased via capillary liquid film boiling enhancement with accelerated vapor escape for delaying surface dry out.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein wires forming the mesh have a diameter of 20-100 μm and the wires are spaced by 10-500 μm.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the mesh comprises three or more layers.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the gradient microchannels have an opening angle between 30° and 90°.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, wherein the plurality of nano or microstructured features includes a group of shapes selected from a cavity, a pore, and a gap, and the plurality of nano or microstructured features have a height-to-width ratio larger than 2.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The system of claim 1, further comprising a hydrophilic or hydrophobic coating on at least a portion of the mesh.
