## Abstract

Aerogel can be coated with a polymerizable resin, which cures to form a polymer-coated aerogel. The coated aerogels can be used structural or thermal insulating component, such as in analytical and scientific devices. Coated aerogels can be further coated with conductive material, a semi-conductive material, a non-conductive material, a resistive material, or a combination thereof.

## Claims

### Claim 1

An ion mobility spectrometer operative on a sample, the spectrometer comprising:
a) an inlet for the sample, an ionization region, and a drift tube, and
b) an aerogel at least partially between the inlet and the ionization region, the aerogel providing a thermal break between the inlet and the ionization region.

### Claim 2

An ion mobility spectrometer operative on a sample, the spectrometer comprising:
a) an inlet for the sample, an ionization region, and a drift tube;
b) an aerogel at least partially between the inlet and the ionization region; and
c) an aerogel at least partially between the ionization region and the drift tube.

### Claim 3

An ion mobility spectrometer operative on a sample, the spectrometer comprising:
a) an inlet for the sample, an ionization region, and a drift tube;
b) an aerogel at least partially between the inlet and the ionization region; and
c) an aerogel at least partially surrounding the inlet, the ionization region, and the drift tube.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The ion mobility spectrometer of claim 1, further comprising a chemical permeation chamber that is at least partially surrounded by an aerogel.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The ion mobility spectrometer of claim 4, further comprising a dryer module.

### Claim 6 (depends on 5)

The ion mobility spectrometer of claim 5, wherein the dryer module is at least partially surrounded by an aerogel.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1)

The ion mobility spectrometer of claim 1, wherein the inlet is connected to a thermal desorber.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The ion mobility spectrometer of claim 7, further comprising a chemical permeation chamber that is at least partially surrounded by an aerogel.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The ion mobility spectrometer of claim 8, further comprising a dryer module.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The ion mobility spectrometer of claim 9, wherein the dryer module is at least partially surrounded by an aerogel.

### Claim 11 (depends on 2)

The ion mobility spectrometer of claim 2, wherein the inlet is connected to a thermal desorber.
