## Abstract

A system for reducing airway obstructions of a patient may include a ventilator, a control unit, a gas delivery circuit with a proximal end in fluid communication with the ventilator and a distal end in fluid communication with a nasal interface, and a nasal interface. The nasal interface may include at least one jet nozzle, and at least one spontaneous respiration sensor in communication with the control unit for detecting a respiration effort pattern and a need for supporting airway patency. The system may be open to ambient. The control unit may determine more than one gas output velocities. The more than one gas output velocities may be synchronized with different parts of a spontaneous breath effort cycle, and a gas output velocity may be determined by a need for supporting airway patency.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A ventilation system comprising:
a ventilator; and
a nasal interface in fluid communication with the ventilator, the nasal interface comprising:
an outer tube having an inlet, an outlet, and a jet pump throat between the inlet and the outlet, the outer tube being dimensioned to fit at least partially inside a patient's nostril;
a nozzle for delivering gas from the ventilator into the inlet of the outer tube; and
a breath sensing lumen terminating in a breath sensing port within the outer tube.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The ventilation system of claim 1, wherein the breath sensing lumen is formed integrally with the outer tube.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

The ventilation system of claim 1, wherein the breath sensing lumen comprises a separate tube coupled to the outer tube.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The ventilation system of claim 1, wherein the breath sensing port is located within the outer tube at a position corresponding to a region of the outer tube nearer to the outlet than to the inlet.
