## Abstract

The disclosure provides for the use of an oligosaccharide for the treatment of liver disease. More particularly, the disclosure provide methods and composition for treating liver disease comprising administering 2′-FL to a subject.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A method for treating a subject with alcohol induced liver disease, comprising administering to the subject an effective amount of a composition comprising an oligosaccharide with a structure of Formula I:
or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, polymorph, solvate, or prodrug thereof, wherein:
R1-R20 are independently selected from the group consisting of H, D, halo, azide, nitro, amine, aldehyde, alkoxy, ketone, ester, carboxylic acid, hydroxyl, substituted or non-substituted (C1-C6)alkyl, substituted or non-substituted (C1-C6)heteroalkyl, substituted or non-substituted (C2-C6)alkenyl, substituted or non-substituted (C2-C6)heteroalkenyl, optionally substituted or non-substituted (C2-C6)alkynyl, substituted or non-substituted (C2-C6)heteroalkynyl, and heterocycle; and wherein the effective amount is obtained to inhibit fecal Enterococcus faecalis and/or cytolysin in the presence of alcohol.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the oligosaccharide comprises a structure of Formula 1(a):
or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, polymorph, solvate, or prodrug thereof, wherein:
R17-R20 are independently selected from the group consisting of H, D, halo, azide, nitro, amine, aldehyde, alkoxy, ketone, ester, carboxylic acid, hydroxyl, substituted or non-substituted (C1-C6)alkyl, substituted or non-substituted (C1-C6)heteroalkyl, substituted or non-substituted (C2-C6)alkenyl, substituted or non-substituted (C2-C6)heteroalkenyl, substituted or non-substituted (C2-C6)alkynyl, substituted or non-substituted (C2-C6)heteroalkynyl, and heterocycle.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The method of claim 2, wherein the oligosaccharide comprises a structure of Formula 1(b):
or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, polymorph, solvate, or prodrug thereof.

### Claim 4 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the composition is orally administered to the subject.

### Claim 5 (depends on 4)

The method of claim 4, wherein the composition is a nutritional composition.

### Claim 6 (depends on 4)

The method of claim 4, wherein the composition is formulated as a tablet or a capsule.

### Claim 7 (depends on 5)

The method of claim 5, wherein the composition comprises at least 9% by weight of the oligosaccharide in the nutritional composition.

### Claim 8 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the alcohol-induced liver disease is caused by chronic and/or excessive alcohol consumption.

### Claim 9 (depends on 1)

The method of claim 1, wherein the composition is administered sequentially or concurrently with one or more other liver disease treatments.

### Claim 10 (depends on 9)

The method of claim 9, wherein one or more other liver disease treatments are selected from corticosteroids, pentoxifylline, cysteamine and/or cystamine.

### Claim 11

A method to restore or compensate for the loss α1-2-fucosylated glycans on the surface of a subject's intestinal epithelial cells caused by excessive and/or chronic alcohol consumption, comprising:
administering to the subject an effective amount of an oligosaccharide of Formula I, or a composition comprising an effective amount of an oligosaccharide of Formula I:
or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, polymorph, solvate, or prodrug thereof, wherein:
R1-R20 are independently selected from the group consisting of H, D, halo, azide, nitro, amine, aldehyde, alkoxy, ketone, ester, carboxylic acid, hydroxyl, substituted or non-substituted (C1-C6)alkyl, substituted or non-substituted (C1-C6)heteroalkyl, substituted or non-substituted (C2-C6)alkenyl, substituted or non-substituted (C2-C6)heteroalkenyl, substituted or non-substituted (C2-C6)alkynyl, substituted or non-substituted (C2-C6)heteroalkynyl, and heterocycle; and wherein the effective amount is obtained to inhibit fecal Enterococcus faecalis and/or cytolysin in the presence of alcohol.

### Claim 12 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, wherein the oligosaccharide comprises a structure of Formula 1(b):
or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt, polymorph, solvate, or prodrug thereof.

### Claim 13 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, wherein the oligosaccharide or the composition is orally administered to the subject.

### Claim 14 (depends on 13)

### Claim 18 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, further comprising administering an agent that inhibits Enterococcus faecalis growth.

### Claim 19 (depends on 11)

The method of claim 11, further comprising administering an agent for inhibiting the biological activity of cytolysin in the gut of the subject.
