Abstract
Systems and methods for improving operating characteristics of displays such as liquid crystal on silicon displays.
Claims20
A display system, comprising:
- a display including a plurality of pixels;
- a display table including a plurality of rows, each row of the display table including a sequence of bit-planes associated with one of a plurality of phase-shift values for each of the pixels in the display, each sequence of bit-planes:
- including a number of 1-values and a number of 0-values;
- having the 1-values and the 0-values spaced apart within the sequence to reduce phase ripple of a pixel in the plurality of pixels to which the sequence of bit-planes is applied;
- and
- having at least one 1-value including one or more groups of 1-values having approximately a same number of bit planes,
- each of the one or more groups of 1-values spaced apart from one another within the sequence of bit-planes by one or more groups of 0-values,
- each of the one or more groups of 0-values having approximately a same number of bit-planes;
- and
- a display driver configured to apply a sequence of bit-planes to each of the plurality of pixels, the sequence of bit-planes for each of the plurality of pixels corresponding to one of the rows in the display table and the one of the rows in the display table being determined by a corresponding phase-shift value for each of the plurality of pixels.

- and
- a display table including:
- a plurality of rows, each row of the display table including a sequence of bit-planes associated with one of a plurality of phase-shift values for one of the pixels in the display, each sequence of bit-planes including a number of 1-values and a number of 0-values;
- each sequence of bit-planes that has at least one 1-value including one or more groups of 1-values having approximately a same number of bit planes;
- each of the one or more groups of 1-values being spaced apart from one another within the sequence of bit-planes by one or more groups of 0-values, each of the one or more groups of 0-values having approximately a same number of bit-planes;
- and
- a display driver configured to send a sequence of bit-planes to the pixel of the display according to the phase-shift value for the pixel and a corresponding row of the display table,
- wherein the plurality of phase-shift values is 2n phase-shift values and wherein, for each sequence of bit-planes where the number of 1-values is greater than one and less than 2n−2, the number of 1-values are distributed across a length of the sequence of bit-planes such that one or more groups of one or more 1-values are spaced apart from one another by one or more groups of one or more 0-values.

A method, comprising:
- generating a display table including a plurality of bit-plane sequences, each bit-plane sequence associated with one of a plurality of phase-shift values for each of a plurality of pixels in a display, the display table including:
- a plurality of rows, each row of the display table including a sequence of bit-planes associated with one of the plurality of phase-shift values for each of the pixels in the display;
- each sequence of bit-planes including a number of 1-values and a number of 0-values and having the 1-values and the 0-values spaced apart within the sequence to reduce phase ripple of a pixel in the plurality of pixels to which the sequence of bit-planes is applied;
- determining a phase-shift value for each the plurality pixels in the display;
- and
- applying, to each of the plurality of pixels in the display, the sequency of bit-planes corresponding to the determined phase-shift value for the pixel,
- wherein determining a phase-shift value for each of the plurality of pixels in the display comprises determining 2n phase-shift values, wherein each of the phase-shift values is associated with a number P in a range 0, 1, . . . , 2n−1, wherein P represents a number of 1-values in a sequence of bit-planes associated with one of the plurality of phase-shift values and 2n−P represents a number of 0-values in the sequence of bit-planes associated with the one of the phase-shift values.
