Abstract

Embodiments are directed to managing data visualizations. A primary visualization that is associated with a data model may be provided such that the primary visualization may be displayed in a display panel. Insight items may be generated based on the primary visualization and the data model such that the insight items may correspond to one or more visualizations that may share one or more portions of the data model and such that the insight items may be displayed in an insight panel. In response to an insight item being selected from the insight panel, additional actions may be performed, including: generating a visualization based on the insight item that is displayed in the display panel instead of the primary visualization; and generating a scratch item that includes a thumbnail view of the primary visualization such that the thumbnail view is displayed in a scratch panel.

Dependent claims

A method for managing data visualizations using one or more processors that execute instructions that are configured to cause performance of actions, comprising:

providing a primary visualization that is associated with a data model, wherein the primary visualization is displayed in a display panel of a graphical user interface (GUI);
and
in response to a user's interaction with the display panel of the GUI, performing actions:
generating an insight item and an associated natural language narrative based on the data model, wherein the insight item includes an insight visualization and the associated natural language narrative that explains a meaning for the insight item and a relevance for one or more of a trend or an insight associated with the insight item;
employing the GUI to display an insights panel that provides an interactive display of the insight item and the associated natural language narrative;
in response to a user's interaction with the insights panel displayed by the GUI, selecting the insight item;
and
displaying the insight item in the display panel in place of the primary visualization.
