Abstract
A method for producing a clay/polymer composite may include choosing an intercalating agent from among organic constituents of a polymer matrix, forming a polymer-compatible organoclay by mixing and milling an intercalating agent with a clay, and adding a polymer-compatible organoclay to a polymer matrix.
Claims16
A method for producing a clay/polymer composite comprising a clay added to a polymer matrix, the method comprising:
- choosing an intercalating agent from among organic constituents of the polymer matrix, wherein the constituents of the polymer matrix comprise at least one of a natural or synthetic rubber, a tackifier, a filler, a softener, and an antioxidant, the tackifier comprising colophony;
- forming a polymer-compatible organoclay by mixing and milling the intercalating agent and the clay with a weight ratio of between 1:0.42 and 1:0.66 (clay powder:intercalating agent), wherein an average particle size of the polymer-compatible organoclay is between 0.2 μm and 10 μm;
- and
- adding the polymer-compatible organoclay to the polymer matrix by mixing the polymer-compatible organoclay and the constituents of the polymer matrix with the polymer-compatible organoclay concentration between 3 and 5 parts per hundred rubber (PHR).
