## Abstract

Surgical retractors and methods thereof for retracting body tissue in a therapeutic procedure. The surgical retractor may include retractor blades have openings or channels configured to receive bone pins while maintaining accessibility and visibility of the operative window.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A surgical retractor system comprising:
first and second bone pins each comprising a head, a threaded shaft, and a distal tip;
an elongated disc shim comprising an upper portion and an elongated lower portion; and
a retractor comprising:
a frame portion having a first arm, a first blade arm operably attached to the first arm, a second arm, a second blade arm operably attached to the second arm, a third arm, and a third blade arm operably attached to the third arm;
a first blade extending from the first blade arm;
a second blade extending from the second blade arm; and
a third blade extending from the third blade arm, the third blade comprising a slot extending along a portion thereof, the slot of the third blade configured to slidably receive the lower portion of the disc shim and the upper portion of the disc shim configured to engage outer edges of the third blade to prevent the disc shim from advancing beyond a tip of the third blade;
wherein:
the first and second blades are configured to move in a cephalad-caudal direction and the third blade is configured to move in an anterior direction, and each blade is adapted to be translated and angulated independently from one another,
and
the first blade and the second blade each comprise an opening extending along an entire length thereof from a first end to a second end of the respective blade, each opening configured to receive one of the first and second bone pins, each opening being an enclosed channel or a partial channel which is partially open circumferentially by more than 180 degrees.

### Claim 2 (depends on 1)

The surgical retractor system of claim 1, wherein each opening is a partial channel in fluid communication with an interior of the respective blade.

### Claim 3 (depends on 2)

The surgical retractor system of claim 2, wherein each partial channel has a partially circular cross-section.

### Claim 4 (depends on 2)

The surgical retractor system of claim 2, further comprising an insert received in each partial channel, each insert configured to receive a portion of the respective bone pin.

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

The surgical retractor system of claim 1, wherein each opening is a partial channel and an entry to each partial channel is tapered around a periphery of the respective entry.

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

The surgical retractor system of claim 1, wherein each opening is an enclosed channel and a portion of each enclosed channel is threaded and is adapted to engage a threaded portion on the respective bone pin.

### Claim 7

A surgical retractor system comprising:
first and second bone pins each comprising a head, a threaded shaft, and a distal tip;
an elongated disc shim comprising an upper portion and an elongated lower portion; and
a retractor comprising:
a frame portion having a first arm, a first blade arm operably attached to the first arm, a second arm, a second blade arm operably attached to the second arm, a third arm, and a third blade arm operably attached to the third arm;
a first blade extending from the first blade arm, the first blade comprising a first opening extending from a first end to a second end of the first blade, the first opening configured to receive the first bone pin and engage a first adjacent bone, the first opening being an enclosed channel or a partial channel which is partially open circumferentially by more than 180 degrees;
a second blade extending from the second blade arm, the second blade comprising a second opening extending from a first end to a second end of the second blade, the second opening configured to receive the second bone pin and engage a second adjacent bone, the second opening being an enclosed channel or a partial channel which is partially open circumferentially by more than 180 degrees; and
a third blade extending from the third blade arm, the third blade comprising a slot extending along a portion thereof and locking tabs, the slot of the third blade configured to slidably receive the lower portion of the disc shim and the upper portion of the disc shim configured to engage outer edges of the third blade to lock the disc shim in a fully extended position;
wherein the first and second blades are configured to move in a cephalad-caudal direction and the third blade is configured to move in an anterior direction, and each blade is adapted to be translated and angulated independently from one another.

### Claim 8 (depends on 7)

The surgical retractor system of claim 7, wherein each opening is a partial channel in fluid communication with an interior of the respective blade.

### Claim 9 (depends on 8)

The surgical retractor system of claim 8, wherein each partial channel extends along an entire length of the respective blade respectively.

### Claim 10 (depends on 8)

The surgical retractor system of claim 8, wherein each partial channels has a partially circular cross-section.

### Claim 11 (depends on 7)

The surgical retractor system of claim 7, wherein each opening is a partial channel and an entry to each partial channel is tapered around a periphery of the respective entry.

### Claim 12 (depends on 7)

The surgical retractor system of claim 7, wherein each opening is an enclosed channel and a portion of each enclosed channel is threaded and is configured to engage a threaded portion on the respective bone pin.
