Abstract
Various embodiments set forth light emission display elements, and display devices that include such display elements. In some embodiments, a display element includes an electroluminescent light source and a pair of reflective elements that form a resonant cavity for a particular range of wavelengths and/or a particular polarization of light. One or both of the reflective elements can include meta-reflectors, such as anisotropic meta-reflectors or chiral meta-reflectors. An optional waveplate can be placed between the reflective elements to adjust the polarization state of light emitted by the display element.
Claims24
A display element, comprising:
- an electroluminescent (EL) light source;
- and
- a plurality of reflective elements, wherein the plurality of reflective elements form a resonant cavity for a polarization of light, at least one reflective element included in the plurality of reflective elements comprises an array of nanopillars or nanostructures, and each nanopillar or nanostructure in the array of nanopillars or nanostructures has a shape in a same orientation.
A display device, comprising:
- a plurality of pixels, each of the pixels comprising:
- an electroluminescent element, and
- a plurality of reflective elements, wherein the plurality of reflective elements form a resonant cavity for a polarization of light, at least one reflective element included in the plurality of reflective elements comprises an array of nanopillars or nanostructures, and each nanopillar or nanostructure in the array of nanopillars or nanostructures has a shape in a same orientation.
A computer-implemented method, comprising:
- determining states of a plurality of pixels for at least one point in time;
- driving each pixel included in the plurality of pixels based on a corresponding state, wherein driving the pixel comprises:
- driving an electroluminescent element to emit light within an optical cavity formed by a plurality of reflective elements, wherein a polarization of light is resonant within the optical cavity, at least one reflective element included in the plurality of reflective elements comprises an array of nanopillars or nanostructures, and each nanopillar or nanostructure in the array of nanopillars or nanostructures has a shape in a same orientation.
