Handling a UE that is in the idle state

An Access and mobility Management Function (AMF), the AMF comprising:

• a receiver for receiving a request to establish User Plane (UP) for a user equipment's (UE's) protocol data unit (PDU) session, wherein the request comprises information indicating an access type and the request is transmitted by a Session Management Function (SMF);
• memory;
• and
• processing circuitry coupled to the memory, wherein the AMF is configured to:
• in response to the request to establish UP for the UE's PDU session, perform the steps of:
• determining that a condition is satisfied, wherein determining that the condition is satisfied comprises determining that the UE is in the idle state with respect to both a 3GPP access and a non-3GPP access;
• and
• as a result of determining that the condition is satisfied, initiating paging of the UE by the 3GPP access.

A method performed by a user equipment (UE), the method comprising:

• receiving a page message, wherein the page message is configured to trigger the UE to make a Service Request (SR) and the page message comprises an indicator indicating a preferred access type;
• in response to determining that the indicated preferred access type is non-3GPP access, determining whether non-3GPP access is available;
• and
• performing an SR procedure over 3GPP accesses as a result of determining that non-3GPP access is not available.

A user equipment (UE), the UE comprising:

• a receiver for receiving a page message comprising an indicator indicating a preferred access type, wherein the page message is configured to trigger the UE to make a Service Request (SR);
• and
• processing circuitry coupled to the receiver, wherein the UE is configured to:
• in response to determining that the preferred access type is non-3GPP access, determining whether non-3GPP access is available;
• and
• performing an SR procedure over 3GPP access as a result of determining that non-3GPP access is not available.
