Abstract
A method of rebalancing electrolytes in a redox flow battery system comprises directing hydrogen gas generated on the negative side of the redox flow battery system to a catalyst surface, and fluidly contacting the hydrogen gas with an electrolyte comprising a metal ion at the catalyst surface, wherein the metal ion is chemically reduced by the hydrogen gas at the catalyst surface, and a state of charge of the electrolyte and pH of the electrolyte remain substantially balanced.
Claims20
A method of rebalancing electrolyte in redox flow battery system, comprising:
- directing hydrogen from positive and negative electrodes to a catalyst surface;
- fluidly contacting the hydrogen with an electrolyte comprising a metal ion at the catalyst surface;
- and
- flowing hydrogen from an external source to the catalyst surface in response to a change in pH.
A redox flow battery, comprising:
- a catalyst bed fluidly coupled to a redox flow battery cell;
- and
- a controller comprising computer-readable instructions stored on non-transitory memory thereof that when executed enable the controller to:
- determine a hydrogen leak in an electrode of the redox flow battery based on a change in pH, and
- flow hydrogen from an external source in response to the hydrogen leak.
A redox flow battery system, comprising:
- a redox flow battery cell, and
- a catalyst bed positioned in a rebalancing reactor fluidly coupled to the redox flow battery cell, the catalyst bed including,
- a substrate layer, a spacing layer, and a catalyst layer interposed between and attached to the substrate layer and the spacing layer to form the catalyst bed, wherein the rebalancing reactor comprises at least one shroud.
