Abstract
Systems and methods for forming an oxidation protection system on a composite structure are provided. In various embodiments, an oxidation protection system disposed on a substrate may comprise a boron-silicon-glass layer formed directly on the composite structure. The boron-silicon-glass layer may comprise a boron compound, a silicon compound, and a glass compound.
Claims6
An oxidation protection system disposed on an outer surface of a substrate, the oxidation protection system, comprising:
- a boron-silicon-glass layer disposed on the outer surface, wherein the boron-silicon-glass layer is formed in direct contact with the outer surface of the substrate, the boron-silicon-glass layer comprising:
- a boron compound, the boron compound forming between 20.0% and 25.0% of a weight percentage of the boron-silicon-glass layer;
- a silicon compound, the silicon compound forming between 27.0% and 32.0% of the weight percentage of the boron-silicon-glass layer;
- and
- a glass compound, the glass compound forming between 5.0% and 25.0% of the weight percentage of the boron-silicon-glass layer, wherein the glass compound comprises a borosilicate glass.
2 more elements
A method for forming an oxidation protection system on a composite structure, comprising:
- applying a boron slurry to the composite structure, wherein a first average particle size of a first group of boron compound particles in the boron slurry is about 9.3 micrometers, wherein a second average particle size of a second group of boron compound particles in the boron slurry is about 0.7 micrometers, and wherein the boron slurry comprises about 7.2% by weight boron carbide having the second average particle size of about 0.7 micrometers and about 16.9% by weight boron carbide having the first average particle size of about 9.3 micrometers;
- performing a first low temperature bake by heating the composite structure at a first temperature;
- applying a silicon slurry to the composite structure, wherein a third average particle size of a first group of silicon compound particles in the silicon slurry is about 1 micrometer, wherein a fourth average particle size of a second group of silicon compound particles in the silicon slurry is about 17 micrometers, and wherein the silicon slurry comprises about 9.3% by weight silicon carbide having the fourth average particle size of about 17 micrometers and about 21.7% by weight silicon carbide having the third average particle size of about 1 micrometers;
- performing a second low temperature bake by heating the composite structure at a second temperature;
- and
- performing a high temperature heat treatment by heating the composite structure at a third temperature, the third temperature being greater than the first temperature and the second temperature.
