Abstract
Methods are provided for controlled release of stabilized bacteria into the oral cavity on consumption of a food, candy, gum, or similar substance so as to promote colonization of oral surface by the bacteria. Bacteria are selected to treat an oral condition, such as oral disease, halitosis, and/or stained enamel on consumption of the food.
Claims6
A method of at least transiently colonizing an oral cavity with probiotic bacteria, comprising:
- providing an oral patch comprising a protective layer, and a film layer comprising a first surface coupled to the protective layer, and wherein the film layer comprises a stabilized bacterial formulation comprising an isolated, non-pathogenic, hydrogen peroxide bacterial species or strain and a genetically modified LDH-deficient bacterial strain, wherein the protective layer is permeable;
- placing the film layer in contact with a surface of the oral cavity;
- and
- retaining the oral patch in the oral cavity for a time sufficient to release at least a portion of the stabilized bacterial formulation into the oral cavity.
