Systems and methods for monitoring and controlling fluid balance during a biological fluid procedure

A biological fluid processing device configured for use in combination with a fluid circuit comprising a separation chamber and a treatment container, the biological fluid processing device comprising:

• a separation component configured to receive at least a portion of the separation chamber;
• an irradiation component configured to receive at least a portion of the treatment container;
• a pump system configured to convey fluid through the fluid circuit;
• and
• a controller configured to execute a procedure in which
• the pump system is actuated to pump whole blood from a blood source into the separation chamber,
• the separation component is actuated to separate the whole blood in the separation chamber into a plasma portion, a red blood cell portion, and a target cell portion,
• the pump system is actuated to pump at least a portion of the plasma portion and the red blood cell portion back to the blood source while the separation component is separating the whole blood in the separation chamber and while the target cell portion remains in the separation chamber,
• the pump system is actuated to pump at least a portion of the target cell portion from the separation chamber into the treatment container,
• actuate the irradiation component to create a treated target cell product within the treatment container, and
• actuate the pump system to pump at least a portion of the treated target cell product from the treatment container to the blood source, wherein
• the controller is further configured to estimate an end-of-procedure fluid balance based at least in part on a total blood volume of the blood source,
• the controller is programmed with minimum and maximum limits for said end-of-procedure fluid balance, and
• the controller is programmed to allow an operator to input a target end-of-procedure fluid balance.
