Telecommunications apparatus and methods

A non-transitory, computer-readable medium storing instructions that, when executed by a processor in a terminal device for use in a wireless telecommunication system comprising a plurality of base stations including one or more base stations that support a power boost operating mode in which a base station's available transmission power is concentrated to provide enhanced transmission powers in a subset of its available transmission resources, control the terminal device to implement a method comprising:

• receiving an indication of the extent to which the one or more base stations support the power boost operating mode in the wireless telecommunication system;
• deriving one or more characteristics of received signals from the plurality of base stations in the wireless telecommunications system, the derived one or more characteristics including at least one of power measurements or quality measurements associated with reference signals transmitted by the plurality of base stations in the wireless telecommunications system;
• and
• choosing a base station from among the plurality of base stations of the wireless telecommunication system based on the indicated extent to which the one or more base stations support the power boost mode and on the derived one or more characteristics.
