Abstract
Systems and methods for moving a convertible bench between a first position, which presents a backrest, and a second position, which presents a tabletop, is described herein. While the described systems can include any suitable component, in some cases, they include a base having a first end piece that has a first set of legs with a first arched leg support that extends between the first set of legs and a second end piece having a second set of legs with a second arched leg support that extends between the second set of legs. The bench further includes a backrest/table portion that is hingedly coupled to the base so as to be pivotable from a first position that presents a backrest to a second position that presents a tabletop. Other implementations are described.

A convertible bench comprising:
- a base having:
- a first end piece having:
- a first contact surface that is disposed at a lower end portion of the first end piece and that is configured to contact a floor surface to support the convertible bench;
- a front leg and a rear leg;
- an arched leg support that comprises an upper arcuate shaped member and a lower arcuate shaped member that are coupled to the front leg and the rear leg, and the front leg and the rear leg coupled to the first contact surface, wherein the lower arcuate shaped member is recessed in from a laterally outermost edge of at least one of the front leg and the rear leg such that the laterally outermost edge of the at least one leg extends out laterally from a center of the convertible bench past the lower arcuate shaped member;
- a sitting surface support that is disposed at the upper arcuate shaped member of the first end piece, such that the sitting surface support is disposed above an apex of the lower arcuate shaped member and such that the first end piece defines an opening that extends completely through the first end piece with the opening being disposed above the lower arcuate shaped member of the arched leg support and below a portion of the sitting surface support;
- a second end piece;
- and
- a cross member that extends along its length between, and that couples to both of, the first end piece and the second end piece, such that a first end of the cross member is disposed between the apex of the lower arcuate shaped member of the arched leg support and the sitting surface support;
- and
- a backrest/table portion that is pivotally coupled to the base to pivot from a first position to a second position.
A convertible bench comprising:
- a base having:
- a first end piece having:
- a first contact surface that is configured to support the convertible bench on a floor surface;
- a second contact surface that is configured to support the convertible bench on the floor surface;
- a front leg and a rear leg;
- an arched leg support that extends between, and that couples together, the front leg and the rear leg, wherein the first contact surface and the second contact surface are each disposed at a lower end portion of the first end piece, and wherein the arched leg support comprises an upper arcuate shaped coupling and a lowermost arcuate shaped coupling that extends between the first contact surface and the second contact surface, wherein the lowermost arcuate shaped coupling is recessed in from a laterally outermost edge of at least one of the front leg and the rear leg such that the laterally outermost edge of the at least one leg extends out laterally from a center of the convertible bench past the lowermost arcuate shaped coupling;
- and
- a sitting surface support that receives a sitting surface and that is disposed at the upper arcuate shaped coupling in an upper end portion of the first end piece such that the sitting surface support is disposed above an apex of the lowermost arcuate shaped coupling;
- a second end piece;
- and
- a cross member that extends between, and couples to both of, the first end piece and the second end piece, such that a first end of the cross member is disposed between the apex of the lowermost arcuate shaped coupling and the sitting surface support;
- and
- a backrest/table portion that is pivotally coupled to the base to pivot from a first position to a second position.
A convertible bench comprising:
- a base having:
- a first end piece comprising:
- a first contact surface;
- a second contact surface;
- a front leg and a rear leg;
- an arched leg support that extends between, and that couples together, the front leg and the rear leg, wherein the first contact surface and the second contact surface are each disposed at a lower end portion of the first end piece, and wherein the arched leg support comprises an upper arcuate shaped coupling and a lowermost arcuate shaped coupling between the first contact surface and the second contact surface, wherein the lowermost arcuate shaped coupling is recessed in from a laterally outermost edge of at least one of the front leg and the rear leg such that the laterally outermost edge of the at least one leg extends out laterally from a center of the convertible bench past the lowermost arcuate shaped coupling;
- and
- a sitting surface support that is disposed at the upper arcuate shaped coupling in an upper end portion of the first end piece so as to be disposed above an apex of the lowermost arcuate shaped coupling and such that the first end piece defines an opening, with the opening being disposed above an upper portion of the lowermost arcuate shaped coupling and below a portion of the sitting surface support;
- a first vertical support that extends between, and couples to each of, the sitting surface support and the apex of the lowermost arcuate shaped coupling;
- a second end piece;
- a sitting surface that extends between the first end piece and the second end piece;
- and
- a cross member that comprises a substantially straight beam that extends between the first end piece and the second end piece such that a first end of the cross member is coupled to the first vertical support so as to extend between the lowermost arcuate shaped coupling and the sitting surface support;
- and
- a backrest/table portion that is pivotally coupled to the base to pivot from a first position that presents a backrest to a second position that presents a tabletop.
A convertible bench comprising:
- a base having:
- a first end piece having:
- a front leg and a rear leg;
- an arched leg support coupled to the front leg and the rear leg and that comprises a lowermost arcuate shaped coupling having a first arc shaped surface, wherein the lowermost arcuate shaped coupling extends between and couples to a first foot and a second foot, wherein the lowermost arcuate shaped member is recessed in from a laterally outermost edge of at least one of the front leg and the rear leg such that the laterally outermost edge of the at least one leg extends out laterally from a center of the convertible bench past the lowermost arcuate shaped member;
- an arcuate flange that comprises a second arc shaped surface and that extends from a lower portion of the lowermost arcuate shaped coupling towards a center of a length of the convertible bench;
- a sitting surface support defining a recess that receives a sitting surface;
