Abstract
An apparatus including a body, a plurality of microphones arranged in a predetermined geometry relative to the body such that the apparatus is configured to capture sound substantially from all directions around the body to produce direction and ambience information for the captured sound, and electronics for processing signals from the plurality of microphones.

Apparatus comprising
- a body,
- a plurality of microphones arranged on the body such that the apparatus is configured to capture sound in a plurality of directions around the body, wherein the plurality of microphones are configured to enable capture of the sound such that a first subset of the plurality of microphones is configured to capture a directional part of the sound around the body, wherein the first subset of the plurality of microphones is configured to receive the sound without acoustic shadowing, wherein all or a second subset of the plurality of microphones is configured to capture at least part of the sound for estimating ambience information of the sound around the body, and
- electronics for processing first signals from the first subset of the plurality of microphones for the directional part of the sound around the body, and second signals from the all or second subset of the plurality of microphones for the ambience information of the sound around the body.
A method comprising:
- capturing sound, with a plurality of microphones arranged on a body of a capture apparatus, in a plurality of directions around the body, wherein the plurality of microphones are configured to enable capture of the sound such that a first subset of the plurality of microphones is configured to capture a directional part of the sound around the body, wherein the first subset of the plurality of microphones is configured to receive the sound without acoustic shadowing, wherein all or a second subset of the plurality of microphones is configured to capture at least part of the sound for estimating ambience information of the sound around the body, and
- processing first signals from the first subset of the plurality of microphones for the directional part of the sound around the body, and second signals from the all or second subset of the plurality of microphones for the ambience information of the sound around the body.
A non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising program instructions stored thereon which, when executed with at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to:
- cause capture of sound, with a plurality of microphones arranged on a body of a capture apparatus, in a plurality of directions around the body, wherein the plurality of microphones are configured to enable capture of the sound such that a first subset of the plurality of microphones is configured to capture a directional part of the sound around the body, wherein the first subset of the plurality of microphones is configured to receive the sound without acoustic shadowing, wherein all or a second subset of the plurality of microphones is configured to capture at least part of the sound for estimating ambience information of the sound around the body, and
- cause processing of first signals from the first subset of the plurality of microphones for the directional part of the sound around the body, and second signals from the all or second subset of the plurality of microphones for the ambience information of the sound around the body.
