Abstract
The embodied invention is a new inspiration/expiration ventilator flow design, with a constant inspiration flow and intermittent-concurrent expiratory flow based on lung pressure setpoints. This mode is possible by using a new dual lumen tube inserted into a patient Trachea. Additionally, the control provides support for patient initiated breathing which is initiated by a lung pressure drop. This control provides continuous and gentle recruitment of lung alveoli.
Claims18
A lung ventilator system, comprising:
- an inspiratory tube configured to be disposed within an airway tube as part of an inspiratory line,
- an inspiratory flow rate measuring device coupled with the inspiratory line, and the inspiratory line coupled to a source of inspiratory air;
- an expiratory line configured to be disposed at least partially within the airway tube, the expiratory line further comprising:
- an expiratory flow rate measuring device and a lung pressure measuring device coupled with the expiratory line;
- an expiratory tube coupled to the expiratory line, the expiratory tube disposed within the airway tube;
- an inspiratory airway positioned between the airway tube and the expiratory tube, the inspiratory airway coupled to the inspiratory line;
- an inspiratory control valve operable for adjusting a rate of inspiratory airflow through the inspiratory line to a patient lung;
- an expiratory control valve operable for adjusting a rate of expiratory airflow through the expiratory line away from the patient lung;
- and
- a ventilatory controller operable to provide continuous inspiratory flow through the inspiratory line while providing an intermittent expiratory flow from the patient through the expiratory tube to facilitate concurrent venting outflow;
- wherein the ventilatory controller is configured to regulate a lung pressure cycle, comprising:
- a) an inspiratory flow rate controlled to an inspiratory setpoint,
- b) the inspiratory setpoint is at a low flow setting,
- c) the expiratory control valve switches between open and closed according to:
- i) the expiratory control valve is configured to open when said lung pressure is at or above a high pressure setpoint, and
- ii) the expiratory control valve is configured to close when said lung pressure is at or below a low pressure setpoint,
- whereby the ventilatory controller is configured to regulate the lung pressure between the high pressure setpoint and the low pressure setpoint with periodic expiratory flows.
