Abstract
Methods and cleaning compositions for reduction of nucleic acid contamination on surfaces, in air, and in solutions using modified pectin are provided.

A method of reducing nucleic acid contamination on a surface comprising:
- contacting a surface contaminated with a nucleic acid with a composition comprising an amidated pectin comprising one or more monomeric units represented by
- or a tautomer, an isomer, or a salt thereof, wherein:
- n is 0, 1, 2, or 3;
- R1 is H or C1-C3 alkyl;
- X, at each occurrence, is independently C2-C4 alkylene or C4-C6 heteroalkylene;
- Y is a C2-C3 alkylene or C4-C6 heteroalkylene;
- and
- R2 and R3 are independently H or C1-C3 alkyl.

- contacting a solution contaminated with a nucleic acid with a solid support comprising an amidated pectin covalently bound thereto, wherein the amidated pectin comprises one or more monomeric units represented by
