The present disclosure is a stilbene-based compound or a salt thereof represented by a following formula (1), wherein a group X represents a nitro group or an amino group optionally having a substituent; a group Y represents an amide group optionally having a substituent or a naphthotriazole group optionally having a substituent; and p and q each independently represent an integer of 0 to 2.

A polarizing film comprising a substrate containing a stilbene-based compound or a salt thereof represented by a following formula (1):
- wherein a group X represents a nitro group or an amino group optionally having a substituent;
- a group Y represents an amide group optionally having a substituent or a naphthotriazole group optionally having a substituent, and p and q each independently represent an integer of 0 to 2, wherein the group X and the group Y do not include an azo bond.
