Abstract
The present invention is generally directed to the synthesis and use of fluorophores. It is more specifically directed to the synthesis and use of deuterated fluorophores. In one case, the present invention provides a compound of the structure shown in FIG. 44.

A compound of the following structure:
- wherein L is one of the following structures
- wherein X is O, Si(CH3)2 or C(CH3)2;
- and,
- wherein R5, R7 and R8 are H, and wherein R6 is selected from H, COOH, COO(alkyl), COO(aryl), C(O)NH(alkyl), C(O)NH(aryl), C(O)NH(CH2)2O—(CH2)2O(CH2)6—Cl and
