The invention relates to methods for disrupting cholesterol crystals and related methods for the prevention and/or treatment of disease.

A method for inducing disassembly of cholesterol crystals in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising orally administering to said subject a composition comprising a carotenoid compound at a concentration sufficient to induce disassembly of the cholesterol crystals.
