Abstract
Disclosed herein is a wireless mesh network comprised of ultra-high-capacity nodes that are capable of establishing ultra-high-capacity links (e.g., point-to-point or point-to-multipoint bi-directional communication links) using a millimeter wave spectrum, including but not limited to 28 Ghz, 39 Ghz, 37/42 Ghz, 60 Ghz (including V band), or E-band frequencies, as examples. The higher capacity and/or extended range of these ultra-high-capacity nodes/links may be achieved via various advanced signal processing techniques. Further, these ultra-high-capacity nodes/links may be used in conjunction with other types of point-to-point and/or point-to-multipoint links to build a multi-layer wireless mesh network.
Claims20
A communication system comprising:
- a wireless mesh network formed by a set of wireless communication nodes,
- wherein each wireless communication node in the wireless mesh network comprises respective wireless communication equipment that is configured to generate two or more steerable beams for establishing two or more independent bidirectional wireless point-to-point (ptp) links with two or more other wireless communication nodes in the wireless mesh network,
- wherein the respective wireless communication equipment of each wireless communication node in a subset of wireless communication nodes from the set of wireless communication nodes is further configured to connect to a base station having massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communication capability via a bidirectional wireless link that is based on a massive MIMO beam, and
- wherein each wireless communication node in the subset of wireless communication nodes is configured to, in response to detecting a trigger, dynamically switch from one of the two or more independent bidirectional wireless ptp links to the bidirectional wireless link that is based on the massive MIMO beam.
