Abstract
The instant disclosure illustrates how the privacy and security of activities occurring on distributed ledger-based networks (DLNs) can be enhanced with the use of zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) that can be used to verify the validity of at least some aspects of the activities without private information related to the activities necessarily being revealed publicly. Methods and systems that are directed at facilitating the tracking and recovery of assets stolen on ZKP-enabled DLNs while preserving the confidentiality of the tokens are presented herein.

A method, comprising:
- receiving, at a sender compute device of a sender and from a recipient computer device of a recipient, a request that is configured to cause a transfer of an asset from the sender to the recipient, the asset represented on a distributed ledger-based network (DLN) by a first token commitment obtained via an application of a first hashing function on a group that includes an asset token associated with the asset, a public identifier on the DLN of the sender and a first counting value;
- generating, in response to the request and via the sender compute device, a second token commitment via an application of a second hashing function on a group that includes the asset token, a public identifier on the DLN of the recipient and a second counting value, the second counting value being same as the first counting value;
- sending the second token commitment to a self-executing code segment on the DLN in response to the second token commitment being generated;
- generating via the sender compute device, a zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) that (1) the second token commitment is generated via the application of the second hashing function on the group that includes the asset token, the public identifier on the DLN of the recipient and the second counting value, and/or (2) the second counting value is same as the first counting value;
- sending, in response to the ZKP being generated, the ZKP to the self-executing code segment to cause the self-executing code segment verify the ZKP;
- and
- receiving, at the sender compute device and in response to verification of the ZKP by the self-executing code segment, a confirmation confirming that the second token commitment is added onto a token commitments data structure of the DLN that contains token commitments approved for addition onto the DLN.
A non-transitory, processor-readable medium storing instructions that when executed to cause a processor of a sender to:
- receive, from a recipient computer device of a recipient, a request that is configured to cause a transfer of an asset from the sender to the recipient, the asset represented on a distributed ledger-based network (DLN) by a first token commitment obtained via an application of a first hashing function on a group that includes an asset token associated with the asset, a public identifier on the DLN of the sender and a first counting value;
- generate, in response to the request, a second token commitment via an application of a second hashing function on a group that includes the asset token, a public identifier on the DLN of the recipient and a second counting value, the second counting value being same as the first counting value;
- send the second token commitment to a self-executing code segment on the DLN in response to the second token commitment being generated;
- generate a zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) that (1) the second token commitment is generated via the application of the second hashing function on the group that includes the asset token, the public identifier on the DLN of the recipient and the second counting value, and/or (2) the second counting value is same as the first counting value;
- send, in response to the ZKP being generated, the ZKP to the self-executing code segment to cause the self-executing code segment verify the ZKP;
- and
- receive, in response to verification of the ZKP by the self-executing code segment, a confirmation confirming that the second token commitment is added onto a token commitments data structure of the DLN that contains token commitments approved for addition onto the DLN.
An apparatus, comprising:
- a processor of a sender;
- and
- a memory coupled to the processor, the memory storing instructions that when executed cause the processor to:
- receive, from a recipient computer device of a recipient, a request that is configured to cause a transfer of an asset from the sender to the recipient, the asset represented on a distributed ledger-based network (DLN) by a first token commitment obtained via an application of a first hashing function on a group that includes an asset token associated with the asset, a public identifier on the DLN of the sender and a first counting value;
- generate, in response to the request, a second token commitment via an application of a second hashing function on a group that includes the asset token, a public identifier on the DLN of the recipient and a second counting value, the second counting value being same as the first counting value;
- send the second token commitment to a self-executing code segment on the DLN in response to the second token commitment being generated;
- generate a zero-knowledge proof (ZKP) that (1) the second token commitment is generated via the application of the second hashing function on the group that includes the asset token, the public identifier on the DLN of the recipient and the second counting value, and/or (2) the second counting value is same as the first counting value;
- send, in response to the ZKP being generated, the ZKP to the self-executing code segment to cause the self-executing code segment verify the ZKP;
- and
- receive, in response to verification of the ZKP by the self-executing code segment, a confirmation confirming that the second token commitment is added onto a token commitments data structure of the DLN that contains token commitments approved for addition onto the DLN.
