Restricting uplink MIMO assignment based on fading in an mmWAVE system

One or more non-transitory computer-readable media having computer-executable instructions embodied thereon that, when executed, perform a method for restricting an uplink Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) assignment, the method comprising:

• receiving fading data from a plurality of user devices located within a portion of a geographic service area provided by a cell site having at least one node configured to wirelessly communicate with at least one of the plurality of user devices via at least one millimeter wave (mmWave);
• determining the portion of the geographic service area satisfies a threshold level of fading based on the fading data;
• and
• based on determining the portion of the geographic service area satisfies a threshold, restricting assignment of the plurality of user devices to a MIMO layer of available MIMO layers.

A method for assigning an uplink Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) assignment, the method comprising:

• receiving fading data from a user device associated with a cell site configured to wirelessly communicate with the user device via at least one millimeter wave (mmWave);
• based on the fading data, determining that the fading data does not satisfy a threshold;
• and
• in response to determining that the fading data of the user device does not satisfy the threshold, assigning the user device to a MIMO layer of available MIMO layers.
