Abstract
A handpiece for a handheld surgical instrument having a motor and a heatsink is provided. The motor is within a motor housing and the heat sink is disposed around and thermally coupled with the motor housing. The handpiece is formed from a material having a first thermal conductivity and the heat sink has a second thermal conductivity that is greater in value than the first thermal conductivity of the material of the handpiece. The heat sink is configured to dissipate heat from the motor during operation of the motor to the handpiece.
Claims18
A handheld surgical instrument, comprising:
- a handpiece comprising a first material having a first thermal conductivity;
- a motor disposed within the handpiece and including a motor housing;
- and
- a heat sink disposed within the handpiece, the heat sink being thermally coupled to the motor housing, the heat sink comprising a second material having a second thermal conductivity that is greater in value than the first thermal conductivity;
- a first coupling;
- and
- a second coupling, wherein the heat sink includes a first end having external threads and a second end opposite the first end, the second end having internal threads, the external threads configured to engage with the first coupling and the internal threads configured to engage with the second coupling where the first and second couplings hold the motor within the heat sink.
A handpiece for a handheld surgical instrument, the handpiece comprising:
- a motor disposed within a motor housing, the motor and motor housing being partially disposed within the handpiece;
- a heat sink disposed about the motor housing within the handpiece and being thermally coupled to the motor housing, wherein the handpiece has a first thermal conductivity and the heat sink has a second thermal conductivity that is greater in value than the first thermal conductivity;
- a first coupling;
- and
- a second coupling, wherein the heat sink includes a first end having external threads and a second end opposite the first end, the second end having internal threads, the external threads configured to engage with the first coupling and the internal threads configured to engage with the second coupling where the first and second couplings hold the motor within the heat sink.
A handpiece for a handheld surgical instrument, the handpiece comprising:
- a motor disposed within a motor housing, the motor and motor housing being partially disposed within the handpiece;
- a heat sink disposed about the motor housing within the handpiece and being thermally coupled to the motor housing, wherein the handpiece has a first thermal conductivity and the heat sink has a second thermal conductivity that is greater in value than the first thermal conductivity;
- a first coupling;
- a second coupling, wherein the heat sink includes a first end having external threads and a second end opposite the first end, the second end having internal threads, the external threads configured to engage with the first coupling and the internal threads configured to engage with the second coupling where the first and second couplings hold the motor within the heat sink;
- and
- an adhesive disposed between the motor housing and the heat sink, wherein the heat sink is configured to dissipate heat from the motor during operation of the motor.
