Compression on-demand in a stream data platform

A method, comprising:

• receiving at a client node one or more streams of data;
• determining at the client node if the one or more streams of data are compressible;
• for those streams of data that are determined to be compressible, sending a request to a server node for an on-demand stream compression service, the request including an indicator of a stream data type for the compressible streams of data;
• launching a deployment by the server node of the on-demand stream compression service at the client node, the on-demand stream compression service including a compressor pool having one or more compressors that are configured to compress the stream data type of the compressible streams of data;
• selecting at least one of the one or more compressors to compress at least one of the compressible streams of data;
• compressing the at least one compressible stream of data using the selected at least one or more compressors;
• and
• sending the compressed stream of data to the server node.
