Abstract
The present invention is silver (I) periodate compounds and their use in preventing or reducing microbial contamination. The invention includes gels, coatings, and articles of manufacture having a surface contacted or coated with a gel comprising an antimicrobial silver (I) compound. Methods of treatment are also disclosed.
Claims16
An article of manufacture comprising a polymer comprising an antimicrobial silver (I) periodate, wherein the silver (I) periodate is one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of pentasilver hexaoxoiodate (Ag5IO6);
- Ag2H3IO6;
- AgxHyIO6, where x+y=5;
- AgxMyIO6, where the total cationic charge of x+y=5 and M is a cation;
- and combinations thereof, excluding compounds containing silver of a valency greater than 1.
A method of making a surface antimicrobial, comprising forming or coating the surface with a polymer comprising silver (I) periodate, wherein the silver (I) periodate is one or more compounds selected from the group consisting of pentasilver hexaoxoiodate (Ag5IO6);
- Ag2H3IO6;
- AgxHyIO6, where x+y=5;
- AgxMyIO6, where the total cationic charge of x+y=5 and M is a cation;
- and combinations thereof, excluding compounds containing silver of a valency greater than 1.
A method of reducing microbial contamination on a substrate comprising coating the substrate with a polymeric substrate comprising one or more silver (I) periodates selected from the group consisting of pentasilver hexaoxoiodate (Ag5IO6);
- Ag2H3IO6;
- AgxHyIO6, where x+y=5;
- AgxMyIO6, where the total cationic charge of x+y=5 and M is a cation;
- and combinations thereof, excluding compounds containing silver of a valency greater than 1.
A method of producing a polymer comprising a silver (I) periodate comprising selecting a polymer, and incorporating a silver (I) periodate selected from the group consisting of pentasilver hexaoxoiodate (Ag5IO6);
- Ag2H3IO6;
- AgxHyIO6, where x+y=5;
- AgxMyIO6, where the total cationic charge of x+y=5 and M is a cation;
- and combinations thereof, excluding compounds containing silver of a valency greater than 1, into the polymer by contacting the iodate with the polymer.
A method of making an antimicrobial polymer, comprising contacting a silver (I) periodate selected from the group consisting of pentasilver hexaoxoiodate (Ag5IO6);
- Ag2H3IO6;
- AgxHyIO6, where x+y=5;
- AgxMyIO6, where the total cationic charge of x+y=5 and M is a cation;
- and combinations thereof, excluding compounds containing silver of a valency greater than 1, with polymer or at least one monomer used to make a polymer, and forming the polymer.
